Karya Ottey is the Director of Compliance at the Nathan Kline Institute for Psychiatric Research. She provides oversight and monitoring for the Institutional Review Board (IRB), Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC), and the Institutional Biosafety Committee. Dr. Ottey has degrees in International Psychology and Bioethics but began her career exploring primate psychology. With nearly two decades of experience in the academic research setting, Dr. Ottey has served a number of roles including as a member of IRB and IACUC, Institutional Privacy Officer, and Conflict of Interest Manager. Her current role serves the institution as a comprehensive source for quality and compliance. In the past, she has operated as an IRB Director within the Office of Mental Health in New York State and as a Senior Regulatory administrator for University Hospitals in Cleveland. Her core interests are in the ethical ramifications of the evolving research regulatory environment, where she believes education of researchers is the best method to achieve better success.
