Brian S. Mittman, PhD is a Senior Scientist in Kaiser Permanente’s Department of Research and Evaluation with additional affiliations at USC and UCLA, where he co-leads the UCLA Clinical and Translational Science Institute (CTSI) Implementation and Improvement Science Initiative. His research interests include implementation and improvement science, health systems and healthcare delivery science, embedded research within learning healthcare systems, and innovative methods for the study of complex health interventions. His recent activities include planning and advocacy for international adoption of high-priority research practices such as universal return of research results to study participants and intervention material sharing. Dr. Mittman convened the planning committee that launched the journal Implementation Science and served as co-editor in chief from 2005-2012. He was a founding member of the U.S. Institute of Medicine (IoM) Forum on the Science of Quality Improvement and Implementation and chaired the NIH peer review panel on Dissemination and Implementation Research in Health in 2007 and 2010. He directed VA’s Quality Enhancement Research Initiative (QUERI) from 2002-2004. He is a member or chair of several DSMBs and research project advisory boards and currently serves on the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI) Methodology Committee, AAMC Advisory Panel on Research, NIH NHLBI Board of External Experts, and advisory boards for additional US and non-US research centers and programs.
