Mary L. Gray, PhD, is Senior Principal Researcher at Microsoft Research and Faculty Associate at Berkman Klein Center for Internet and Society. She maintains a faculty appointment in the Luddy School of Informatics, Computing, and Engineering, with affiliate appointments in Anthropology and Gender Studies at Indiana University. Dr. Gray’s research looks at how technology access, social conditions, and every day uses of media transform people’s lives. Her book, Out in the Country: Youth, Media, and Queer Visibility in Rural America (NYU Press, 2009), looked at how youth in the rural US use media to negotiate their identities, local belonging, and connections to broader, political communities. Dr. Gray’s most recent book, Ghost Work: How to Stop Silicon Valley from Building a New Global Underclass, (co-authored with computer scientist Siddharth Suri) combines ethnography, interviews, and survey data with large-scale platform transaction data to understand the impact of automation on the future of work and workers’ lives. Dr. Gray’s research has been covered in the popular press, including The New York Times, The Los Angeles Times, and The Guardian. She served on the American Anthropological Association’s Executive Board and currently sits on PRIM&R’s Board of Directors, the California Governor's Councel of Economic Advisors, and Stanford University’s “One-Hundred-Year Study on Artificial Intelligence (AI100),” looking at the future of AI and its policy implications. In 2020, Mary was named a MacArthur Fellow for her contributions to anthropology and the study of technology, digital economies, and society.
