Erica Heath, CIP
Upon retiring in 2016, Erica Heath had completed 45 years of service in the pursuit of protection of human subjects of research. Her career started in 1970 working for the University of California San Francisco (UCSF) where one of the committees she managed became the Committee on Human Research (the CHR). When she left UCSF she was Director of Research Protection Committees with responsibility for six committees including the CHR, the animal care committee (IACUC), and the biosafety committee.
In 1984 she founded and became president of Independent Review Consulting, Inc, (IRC) a California corporation. IRC hosted an independent Institutional Review Board (IRB) which met weekly until 2010. In addition to the various administrative duties involved with being president, Ms. Heath was consultant to clients in the preliminary stages of research needing advice about reach programs.
In 2010 IRC and Ethical Review Consulting, a Missouri corporation, founded Ethical and Independent Review Services (E&I Review) from which she retired in 2016.
Ms. Heath has served her profession through facilitating workshops at PRIM&R, serving on the AAHRPP Accreditation Council (7 years), and on the CIP Council (8 years), and contributing articles directed to IRB administrators plus making innumerable comments on IRB Forum. Ms. Heath continues to consult through IRC.
ADDENDUM 2019 – After 2 years of retirement, Erica was tempted by an offer to return to her roots as a 6 month consultant at UCSF as Interim Associate Director for the office she founded. She finished the consultancy after 15 months.
