Jessie Carder is the USDA National Agricultural Library's (NAL), Animal Welfare Information Center (AWIC) Coordinator. Jessie attended Virginia Tech and pursued her bachelor of science degree in Animal and Poultry Sciences, with a minor in Agricultural Economics. She graduated in December 2015 and then went on to get her master’s at the University of Tennessee in animal welfare, behavior and immunology. Specifically, her research focused on the effects of sleep and lying deprivation in dairy cattle on behavior, production and immunology. After graduating with her master’s, she then started her career in northwest Iowa as an Animal Welfare Auditor on pig farms. In 2018, she was offered a contract position at AWIC as a Technical Information Specialist. Then, for about a year, she took a job with the Department of Defense as their IACUC Compliance Coordinator overseeing their animal research labs, before returning to AWIC last March, in her current role, as the AWIC Coordinator.
