Birgit Ledermann has been working in biomedical research for 26 years in both academia and industry. After her general qualification for university entrance she completed an education as technical assistant in chemistry. She received her diploma degree in biology/molecular genetics from the University of Bielefeld (Germany) and her PhD degree in cell biology from the University of Basel. Her postdoctoral lecture qualification in Laboratory Animal Science she received from the University of Zurich and Basel and is currently a private lecturer at the University of Basel in the medical faculty. She previously worked at Sandoz/Novartis Pharma AG as lab head in the area of transgenic animals and at the University of Zurich, Institute for Laboratory Animal Science, in the field of nuclear transfer (cloning). Since 2007 she served in various roles within the area of Animal Welfare for Novartis Pharma AG. In her current role she is responsible for the global Novartis 3Rs program and implementation of 3Rs best practices.
