Nancy L. Haigwood, Ph.D., has served for the last 15 years as Professor and Director of the Oregon National Primate Research Center, Oregon Health & Science University in Beaverton, Oregon. She received her Ph.D. in Microbiology & Immunology from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and completed postdoctoral training in virology at The Johns Hopkins University. She led projects in the biotech and pharmaceutical sectors prior to returning to academia at the nonprofit Seattle Biomedical Research Institute (now Seattle Children's) and the University of Washington in 1997. She has spent the last 37 years of her career working to discover how antibodies can limit the transmission of HIV from infected mothers to their children, which can happen during pregnancy, childbirth, and breastfeeding. Her laboratory has shown that human antibodies that block HIV infection in the laboratory are powerful treatments to clear infection, even when given after infection. These findings are helping to guide the clinical trials for antibodies as therapies to prevent HIV and AIDS in children. As a professor at Oregon Health & Science University, Dr. Haigwood is an advocate for HIV/AIDS education, serving for eight years as a volunteer board member of the regional AIDS service organization, Cascade AIDS Project, including Board President in 2017-2018 and "Heroes of HIV" award in 2022. Dr. Haigwood was elected as a member of the American Academy of Microbiology in 2014 and is the 2022 recipient of the NorthWest Association for Biomedical Research Alvord Award. In addition to her service and dedication to CAP’s mission, she is an advocate for education and openness to increase understanding of science for the public. She has served twice on the board of the National Association for Biomedical Research and is currently working as a volunteer member of the United States Animal Research Openness Initiative.
