Dr. Andrea Rossing McDowell has served as the IRB Administrator at Seattle University for more than a decade. Under her leadership, the SU IRB has established clearer policies, more effective guidance and swift turnaround times, stronger educational outreach, and a positive, collegial reputation across campus. Dr. McDowell often presents for PRIM&R on SBER and small research programs, as well as research on college campuses; she has also served on conference planning committees and co-chaired the PRIM&R SBER preconference. She recently authored the most updated CITI module on students in research and serves as a CITI peer review editor. With more than 25 years of professional writing experience, Dr. McDowell also teaches Business Communication and Business Editing for the SU Albers School of Business and Economics. Her research on non-human animals in Russian and Soviet literature has been published in several journals; her article on Bulgakov’s “Heart of a Dog” will be included in the forthcoming book Short Story Criticism: Mikhail Bulgakov. Dr. McDowell holds bachelor’s degrees in both Journalism and Russian literature from the University of Missouri-Columbia. She holds a master’s degree and Ph.D. in Slavic Studies, and a master’s degree in higher education and student affairs administration from Indiana University-Bloomington, where she also worked as speechwriter for the Chancellor. Dr. McDowell is also available to consult with individuals and organizations in need of developing clear, efficient, and persuasive communication internally and externally; streamlining more effective forms and practices; and improving interpersonal relations among staff and administration.
